Earl Da Grey Interview with GetFreshKid.com

January 29, 2011 Entertainment

A few weeks ago I was surfing the web for some new music and I came across a forum talking about this young dude out of ATL making House tracks. I assumed it was the homie Yella Finesse just with a new name Earl Da Grey , but the thread went on to say this cat was a young as 12??

After a few tracks I had to start posting and spreading the word out about how young and talented this dude was. As luck would have it Earl Da Grey found my artist page and made the correction, hes not 12  but 15, either way still young and very talented . I was able to get a Q/A with Grey.

Q: Name, age, and respective instrument

A: Evan Khalil Colbert, no relation to Stephen(as far as I know), 15 years young, and my primary instrument is my sequencer, FL studio.

Q: What’s the origin of that name? Have you changed the band’s name before?

A: Before I called myself Earl Da Grey, I called myself DJ Ekco, I changed eventually since my name and “DJ Eco” sounded so close, I started calling myself Earl Grey because I am addicted to the tea, and I added a “Da” later on since I didn’t want people to confuse me with the tea.

Q: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

A:  I consider my Main genre of work to be TekFunk, though I do dabble in loads of other genres. As Far as Influences go, I would have to say I really enjoy the music Daft Punk, the Brookes Brothers, Danny Byrd, High Contrast, Blame, Cassius, Goldie, Pryda, Steve Angello, Thomas Bangalter, Le Knight Club, EVERYBODY on hospital records, and Laidback Luke

Q: What track was it that inspired you to make music ?

A: The track that inspired me to make House Music was One More Time.

Q:  Are you on a record label? (major, indie underground, ect) And what has your experience been with this label

A: Phantom Musique, Indie Label, run by my great friends Vatska and Beatrage, I love the label and I love those guys. I also have a release coming up on Mixmash Records, Laidback Lukes LabelAnd two songs coming out on Audiojunkie records. And ive also released on PGR and GSR, big thanks to GSR for releasing my first EP btw.

Q: Could you briefly describe your music-making process?

A: Well I sit down at my computer, usually with a cup of tea, and depending on how I feel, set my Bpm at either 86 or 125. Then I open up Edison and magic happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Usually if I cant get a vibe within the first 5 minutes of making a track I scrap it and try again later on.

Q:  How has your music evolved since you first began playing?

A: My music has evolved greatly I think since I began some 4 years ago, I mean go to the first track on my sound cloud an then go to the most recent, I learned more about sampling, mixing, and have really been working on making original music too.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge in making music ?

A: My biggest challenge in music right now is making original tunes I am satisfied with, I don’t quite have it down yet, but I think I am getting closer with each day, I could probably work on mixing as well.

Q: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD(links, facebook, ect)?

A: You can follow me on twitter here: http://twitter.com/EarlyDaGrey

The internet deserves a big thanks. You guys for this interview :d.Filterglove gets a Hi -5.All the great people at all the record labels I mentioned. The Daftclub and Idmforums for being really awesome.
