DJ Hella Yella – The Best DJ in Central Texas!!

When the conversation of the best DJ’s in central Texas comes into play, there’s only one which (in my opinion) stands out above all the rest, Leon “DJ Hella Yella” O’Neal. Now I could sit here and write a full length biography on the 2010 Southern ENT Award Club DJ of the year, but I’m not. I could boast about how he is a 5x Southern ENT Award Nominee or how he is the 2009 Austin Hip-Hop DJ of the year, but I’m pretty sure he’s got that down already. Instead, I’ll tell you about the first time I got a chance to catch the Yella Hulk in action.
It was the eve of AC Promotions First Class Birthday Bash feat. Trey Songz, and DJ Hella Yella was going to spin my boy Drastik’s set, who was the first performer on the under card. They had a practice set up at The Music Lab in south Austin and I, “just so happen” to be in the building at the time. After getting everything set up, they ran through the list of tracks a few times, and it seemed to me as if everything was going to be alright. DJ DC (Drastik’s normal DJ) had been hyping Hella Yella up to be this sickest DJ ever, so after everything was done and all the kinks were worked out, I figured I’d put the spot light on the Core DJ. So I told the DJ to basically show me what you got (knowing that he has nothing to prove to me). Without hesitation, as soon as the camera light came on Hella Yella broke out into his extremely long roll call. Giving shout outs to the likes of Dorrough Music (N’Genius/Prime Time Click), DJ Murk, Hustle Squad DJ’s, Home Team Records, etc. Immediately following up with his favorite mix of Marcy Playground’s 1997 smash hit single Sex and Candy. All I could say was, “PROFESSIONAL”.
